I'm backing up a rather large /home directory with tar but I'd like to span the archive into CDR sized chuncks, how can I do that? Would another archiver be better suited for archive spanning?
TIA

Wow, none of the archivers are capable of splitting the output into smaller chunks or is this just a low traffic forum? I didn't think tar would but I thought something would.
Are there any other file tools that will split a large .tar.gz into smaller chunks and then put it back together again later if I need to restore?

Lack of a reply should never be intrepreted as an answer to your question. Do you really want 400 replies of "Sorry, I don't know"?

You should be able to figure that out by looking at the posts.
I think you should read this URL:
http://www.lemis.com/questions.html
Although it is specific, apply it generally.
