I've just registered on Fresh Ports and subsequently created my first Watch list. Upon review, I noticed a number of ports tagged as "Broken -Unknown component pkgconfig" with a message or description beneath (e.g., Utilize USE_GNOME=pkgconfig, etc).
Is there an associated site which explains these terms and how to handle? Secondly, I upgrade my ports weekly and don't remember seeing any such messages. Can you recommend sources which will pull all of this together?

A port maintainer will mark a port as broken if it will not build. They usually put the reason within the BROKEN text. Yes, sometimes the messages are very cryptic.

You have some ports installed on your system which you find are marked as broken on FreshPorts. Give me an example. Then try to build it.

Not sure what you want here.... Perhaps the above answers will clear this up.

The ports include:
glib12 1.2.10-9
glib20 2.2.2
gnomemimedata 2.2.1
libaudiofile 0.2.3
libxml 1.8.17-1
cvsupit 3.1
zclock 1.0
Performed "make" on zclock and, as expected, ran into an error. Obviosuly, these ports "broke" sometime after installation.
The list seems rather large. Is "Fresh ports" the only place to find out whether or not you have "broken" ports? I thought running portupgrade would eliminate surprises like these. There's probably some step missing in my portupgrade process.

Please note: The ports you have already installed are not broken. They are fine. There is no reason to change what you already have. What is important to note is that you cannot upgrade them.

Do you now realise what "broken" means? It does not mean what you have installed is defective. It means that the port can no longer be built.

Your installed ports are not broken.

I've just checked each of the above ports. FreshPorts is incorrectly reporting them as broken. Interesting enough, except for zlock, they all had the same broken message:
"Unknown component pkgconfig".
I have fixed these ports.

That is broken. Nothing I can do about that.

Have to admit I didn't fully understand the meaning of "broken" and I did panic.
Thanks again for taking the time to respond. I have to catch up on some Freshports homework.
