Why was the website so slow for so long?

The cause of the slowdown was a change to the ZFS dataset. In conjunction with the database server, very little caching was being done. This combination resulted in increased disk I/O as the system churned through the database. Details in the blog post which outlines the various things which changed. Many graphs.

- Rename PYTHON_FEATURES to USE_PYTHON to comply to USE_PERL5 and to avoid a
conflict in behaviour with the read-only COMPILER_FEATURES knob
- Fix the deprecated USE_PYTHON_BUILD and USE_PYTHON_RUN behaviour, which
usually should be mutually exclusive, but some ports include both knobs

pg8000 is a Pure-Python interface to the PostgreSQL database
engine. It is one of many PostgreSQL interfaces for the Python
programming language. pg8000 is somewhat distinctive in that
it is written entirely in Python and does not rely on any
external libraries (such as a compiled python module, or
PostgreSQL's libpq library). pg8000 supports the standard
Python DB-API version 2.0.
