Why was the website so slow for so long?

The cause of the slowdown was a change to the ZFS dataset. In conjunction with the database server, very little caching was being done. This combination resulted in increased disk I/O as the system churned through the database. Details in the blog post which outlines the various things which changed. Many graphs.

Mark for depreciation, since unmaintained, failing to work with current
versions of GCC, mostly dead upstream, and requiring gcc295 which fails
to build itself (and does not support current version of FreeBSD nor most
primary targets).

1.17 emulators/dlx/Makefile
[patch] mark emulators/dlx as broken except on i386 stable

Per bento, this port only seems to build on i386 stable.
        Mark it so.

The distfile dates from 1991 (!) so it may well be time to
let it go unless someone wants to step up to maintain it.
