Why was the website so slow for so long?

The cause of the slowdown was a change to the ZFS dataset. In conjunction with the database server, very little caching was being done. This combination resulted in increased disk I/O as the system churned through the database. Details in the blog post which outlines the various things which changed. Many graphs.

- non-blocking name resolution via default system methods on *nix
- reduced memory usage

proxy") is really tiny cross-platform (Win32&Unix) proxy
servers set. It includes HTTP proxy with HTTPS and FTP support,
SOCKSv4/SOCKSv4.5/SOCKSv5 proxy, POP3 proxy, TCP and UDP
portmappers. You can use every proxy as a standalone program
(socks, proxy, tcppm, udppm, pop3p) or use combined program
(3proxy).
