Why was the website so slow for so long?

The cause of the slowdown was a change to the ZFS dataset. In conjunction with the database server, very little caching was being done. This combination resulted in increased disk I/O as the system churned through the database. Details in the blog post which outlines the various things which changed. Many graphs.

- Remove FreeBSD 4.X support from unmaintained ports in categories starting
  with letter n-p
Sat, 13 Jan 2007
[ 02:01 linimon ] Original commit
1.6 net/nvnet/Makefile
Maintainer reports that the build error on 6.X is irrelevant, since the nve
driver was put into 6.X a long time ago. Therefore, mark it as IGNORE in
these cases.

Maintainer also wishes to give up maintainership. Source: private email.
