Why was the website so slow for so long?

The cause of the slowdown was a change to the ZFS dataset. In conjunction with the database server, very little caching was being done. This combination resulted in increased disk I/O as the system churned through the database. Details in the blog post which outlines the various things which changed. Many graphs.

Change the way Perl modules are installed, update the default Perl to 5.18.

Before, we had:

  site_perl : lib/perl5/site_perl/5.18
  site_perl/perl_arch : lib/perl5/site_perl/5.18/mach
  perl_man3 : lib/perl5/5.18/man/man3

Now we have:

Loki97 is 128-bit block cipher that accepts a variable-length key. It was
designed by Lawrie Brown, Josef Pieprzyk, and Jennifer Seberry. The default
key length in this implementation is 128 bits. Loki97 was one of the 15
candidates for the AES.
