Why was the website so slow for so long?

The cause of the slowdown was a change to the ZFS dataset. In conjunction with the database server, very little caching was being done. This combination resulted in increased disk I/O as the system churned through the database. Details in the blog post which outlines the various things which changed. Many graphs.

Change the way Perl modules are installed, update the default Perl to 5.18.

Before, we had:

  site_perl : lib/perl5/site_perl/5.18
  site_perl/perl_arch : lib/perl5/site_perl/5.18/mach
  perl_man3 : lib/perl5/5.18/man/man3

Now we have:

  site_perl : lib/perl5/site_perl

Remove all the bootstrap files (.bs) from the plists.

Starting with perl 5.20, they're not installed any more if empty,
and on FreeBSD, they're (always ?) empty.

TEA is a 64-bit symmetric block cipher with a 128-bit key and a variable number
of rounds (32 is recommended). It has a low setup time, and depends on a
large number of rounds for security, rather than a complex algorithm. It was
developed by David J. Wheeler and Roger M. Needham, and is described at
http://www.ftp.cl.cam.ac.uk/ftp/papers/djw-rmn/djw-rmn-tea.html .
