Why was the website so slow for so long?

The cause of the slowdown was a change to the ZFS dataset. In conjunction with the database server, very little caching was being done. This combination resulted in increased disk I/O as the system churned through the database. Details in the blog post which outlines the various things which changed. Many graphs.

Introduce PHP flavors.

  Ports using USES=php:phpize, php:ext, php:zend, and php:pecl are now
  flavored. They will automatically get flavors (php56, php70, php71, php72)
  depending of the versions they support (set with IGNORE_WITH_PHP). As a
  consequence, ports using USES=pear and USES=horde are also flavored.

NEW PORT: www/pear-HTTP_Client (High level HTTP class)

        This is my first port with code from PEAR, so I hope I got
        it right. I based it off of www/pear-HTTP.

        The HTTP_Client class wraps around HTTP_Request and provides
        a higher level interface for performing multiple HTTP
        requests.

        Features:
        * Manages cookies and referrers between requests
        * Handles HTTP redirection
        * Has methods to set default headers and request parameters
        * Implements the Subject-Observer design pattern: the base class sends
          events to listeners that do the response processing.
