Why was the website so slow for so long?

The cause of the slowdown was a change to the ZFS dataset. In conjunction with the database server, very little caching was being done. This combination resulted in increased disk I/O as the system churned through the database. Details in the blog post which outlines the various things which changed. Many graphs.

New port: devel/p5-MooseX-MungeHas

MooseX::MungeHas alters the behaviour of the attributes of your Moo, Moose
or Mouse based class.

It manages to support all three because it doesn't attempt to do anything
smart with metathingies; it simply installs a wrapper for has that munges
the attribute specification hash before passing it on to the original has
function.
