Why was the website so slow for so long?

The cause of the slowdown was a change to the ZFS dataset. In conjunction with the database server, very little caching was being done. This combination resulted in increased disk I/O as the system churned through the database. Details in the blog post which outlines the various things which changed. Many graphs.

Change the way Perl modules are installed, update the default Perl to 5.18.

Before, we had:

  site_perl : lib/perl5/site_perl/5.18
  site_perl/perl_arch : lib/perl5/site_perl/5.18/mach
  perl_man3 : lib/perl5/5.18/man/man3

Now we have:

  site_perl : lib/perl5/site_perl
  site_arch : lib/perl5/site_perl/mach/5.18
  perl_man3 : lib/perl5/site_perl/man/man3

Modules without any .so will be installed at the same place regardless of the

Test::WWW::Mechanize is a subclass of WWW::Mechanize that incorporates
features for web application testing. The Test::WWW::Mechanize::Catalyst
module meshes the two to allow easy testing of Catalyst applications
without starting up a web server.

Testing web applications has always been a bit tricky, normally starting
a web server for your application and making real HTTP requests to it.
This module allows you to test Catalyst web applications but does not
start a server or issue HTTP requests. Instead, it passes the HTTP
request object directly to Catalyst. Thus you do not need to use a real
hostname: "http://localhost/" will do.
