Why was the website so slow for so long?

The cause of the slowdown was a change to the ZFS dataset. In conjunction with the database server, very little caching was being done. This combination resulted in increased disk I/O as the system churned through the database. Details in the blog post which outlines the various things which changed. Many graphs.

Convert net-im/libpurple (and slave ports net-im/finch and net-im/pidgin)
to "USES=libtool tar:bzip2". Bump PORTREVISION on all dependent ports
and modernise them as well (USES, LIB_DEPENDS, staging).

audio/pidgin-musictracker:
- Replace LIBS with LDFLAGS.
- Disable static plugin.

net/online-desktop: Remove obsolete patches.

net-im/mbpurple:
- Drop pkgconf dependency.
- Replace post-patch with MAKE_ARGS.
- Use standard do-build.

At the moment 1385 ports use BUILD_DEPENDS= ${RUN_DEPENDS} and 450
ports use BUILD_DEPENDS:= ${RUN_DEPENDS}. This patch fixes ports that are
currently broken. This is a temporary measure until we organically stop using
:= or someone(s) spend a lot of time changing all the ports over.

Explicit duplication > := > = and this just moves ports one step to the left

Pidgin-Audacious-Remote is a plug-in for Pidgin 2; it creates, in conversation
and chat windows, some controls that allow two-way interaction with Audacious
media player.

Additionally, the plug-in allows users to automatically update their status
message using information from the song played in Audacious.
