Why was the website so slow for so long?

The cause of the slowdown was a change to the ZFS dataset. In conjunction with the database server, very little caching was being done. This combination resulted in increased disk I/O as the system churned through the database. Details in the blog post which outlines the various things which changed. Many graphs.

check_ice is a Nagios plugin-in that checks if a stream is up or
down on a shoutcast or icecast server. The program will look at
the three digit error code (ie. 200, 404, etc.) to give the proper
result code that Nagios can use to know if the stream is up, in
warning or in critical.
