Why was the website so slow for so long?

The cause of the slowdown was a change to the ZFS dataset. In conjunction with the database server, very little caching was being done. This combination resulted in increased disk I/O as the system churned through the database. Details in the blog post which outlines the various things which changed. Many graphs.

    Affects: */py*
    Author: mat@FreeBSD.org
    Reason:
Ports using Python via USES=python are now flavored. All the py3-* ports
have been removed and folded into their py-* master ports.

People using Poudriere 3.2+ and binary packages do not have to do anything.

For other people, to build the Python 3.6 version of, for example,
      databases/py-gdbm, you need to run:

        # make FLAVOR=py36 install

New port: sysutils/py-queuelib

Queuelib is a collection of persistent (disk-based) queues for
Python.

Queuelib's goals are speed and simplicity. It was originally part
of the Scrapy framework and stripped out into its own library.
